The world of blogging has been flooded with resources over the past few years. There are many self-proclaimed ‘experts’ that have no portfolio, limited experience, and horrible blogs.

Part of becoming successful in the blogging world is being able to filter through the mess to find the gems that do exist. No matter how successful your blog is or eventually will become, there is no doubt that you’ll have to learn from others on a daily basis. Whether you choose to lean on Darren Rowse or take a more creative approach, you WILL have problems arise.

The following is a list of 10 Mostly New Things that will help you speed up the learning process and ultimately Make Your Blog Rock! Check out this mixture of tools, reading material, design and seo themes, and other resources.

1. 31 Days to Build a Better Blog by Darren Rowse

31dbbb231 Days to Build a Better Blog takes you through the day-to-day process of maintaining a successful, growing blog. Not only does it offer advice and suggestions, but it shows you how to implement them into your web presence.

At less than $20, this 188-page book is not simply a means for income for Darren, but it is truly a phenomenal resource for today’s bloggers. Don’t be afraid to take the plunge, and do it knowing that it will increase your productivity and your readership!

Here’s what Darren has to say about it:

If you have big dreams for your blog but have been putting improving it in the ‘one day’ basket – you’re not alone.

31 Days to Build a Better Blog is a downloadable e-book designed to help you revitalize your blog by giving you 31 tasks that will all help to turn it into the page view powerhouse you’ve always dreamed of.

2. The Thesis Theme for Wordpress by Chris Pearson

thesis-125x125-1The Thesis Theme is hands-down the best theme available for the powerful Wordpress Platform. Despite attempts by others, it really has no competitors in the premium theme world. Not only is it highly customizable, but it is an absolute SEO powerhouse.

It’s so popular, that I can guarantee that you’ve stumbled across it at some point. The Thesis Theme, developed by the amazing Chris Pearson, can be seen on popular blogs such as: Chris Brogan, CopyBlogger, Matt Cutts. Yes, it looks different in every case. Yes, it’s that customizable!

And just in case you were wondering, MattFlies is built on Thesis as well!

3. Screenr.com

One of the most impressive resources of 2009 has to be Screenr.com. If you haven’t heard, it allows you to take short screencasts of anything (Mac or PC) in High Definition and instantly upload them for public viewing. In addition, you can cross post the video to youtube, embed it on your site, post it to Twitter, and watch it on your iPhone!

And did I fail to mention — It’s free, requires only your browser, and is quite fun too!

Here’s a short screencast that I just created:

4. Authority Rules by Brian Clark

Authority Rules, a free ebook by Brian Clark, takes a look at the importance of authority in online marketing. It’s a short read, but uses real-life examples that will open your eyes to the importance of being a leader and innovator in your niche.

Let’s look at Brian’s simple introduction to the book:

Authority is powerful stuff.

Authority can be abused and it can definitely corrupt…

But it can also build trust, admiration, and respect.

And when it comes to online marketing…

Authority is what works.

Direct and Powerful. Read it Today.

5. TweetMeMe.com and ReTweet.com

While I was tempted to list Twitter as a “New Thing,” I couldn’t bring myself to refer to something so widely used already. However, these complementary (and complimentary) services made the cut.

TweetMeMe and Retweet both allow bloggers to keep track of how often their posts have been posted to Twitter. Additionally, they provide readers with an easy method of twittering about a particular article.

TweetMeMe is the clear leader in the market, and they have continuously enhanced their service. ReTweet is very new, but no one should ever complain about healthy competition! For now use TweetMeMe, but keep an eye on ReTweet.

6. LinkWithin

LinkWithin is a free service that simply provides a sleek looking “Related Posts” widget to your blog. It works like most other related posts plugins, but with some very cool added functionality. If your posts has an image, it will grab it, resize it, and display it as a thumbnail – all formatted perfectly! It loads quickly, looks stylish, and works as advertised.

Currently customization is limited, but in an email from Liliya, I was assured that new features would be added soon. They do provide a simple-to-use, lightweight plugin for Wordpress. LinkWithin is visible at the bottom of every post on MattFlies.

7. ProBlogger Secrets for Blogging by Darren Rowse

Darren Rowse (with Chris Garrett) makes the list twice! ProBlogger Secrets for Blogging focuses on creating and maintaining a successful Money Making blog. It details the journey they took and tells you how to do the same thing.

While the details of blogging success are ever changing and evolutionary at best, this book is a terrific starting point if you are looking to monetize your blog. It’s an excellent cross-niche book that looks at creating income online.

8. Posterous.com

posterous_logo1Posterous, a very simple and potentially robust blogging client has recently burst onto the scene. While you can use it as a replacement for your current blog, I highly suggest using it as a complementary device. It can effectively save you a great amount of time by doing some heavy lifting for you.

For instance, send an email to post@posterous.com with 20 photos attached and watch as they are automatically uploaded to Posterous and Flickr, all the while being posted on Twitter and Facebook. Oh, and they offer a (still growing) list of about 20 other services as well.

9. Pretty Link Pro (Wordpress Plugin

Still in beta, Pretty Link Pro offers some amazing features for your Wordpress hosted blog. URL shortening and tracking, managing pay-per-click campaigns, tracking affiliate activity, beautifying PHP, and adding a tweet this badge and counter are just a few of its features.

Unfortunately, the full version will cost you $150 ($100 until Sep 1, 2009).

10. Trust Agents by Chris Brogan & Julien Smith

trust_agent_coverPerhaps the most current book on influence and the internet, Trust Agents is shooting up the best-selling charts. It’s definitely a worthwhile read, but I’ll let you read the official description below. Also, a sample of the book.

In Trust Agents, two social media veterans show you how to tap into the power of social networks to build your brand’s influence, reputation, and, of course, profits. Today’s online influencers are web natives who trade in trust, reputation, and relationships, using social media to accrue the influence that builds up or brings down businesses online.

The book shows how people use online social tools to build networks of influence and how you can use those networks to positively impact your business. Because trust is key to building online reputations,, those who traffic in it are “trust agents,” the key people your business needs on its side.

  • Delivers actionable steps and case studies that show how social media can positively impact your business
  • Written by authors with over ten years of online media experience
  • Shows you how to build and wield influence online to benefit your brand
  • Combines high-level theory with practical step-by-step guidance

If you want your business to succeed, don’t sit on the sidelines. Instead, use the Web to build trust with your consumers using Trust Agents.

Have you used any of the above? If so, what did you think of them? Are there any others you’d suggest? Let me know in the comments below!

  • Wow! I am using quite a few things on your list:
I am using Thesis on my blog and I love it.
As a regular reader of Darren Rowse, I used the 31 Days to Build a Better Blog. I am still working on some of the tasks. But it drastically improved my blog.
Read Brian Clark's Authority Rules and use Tweetmeme.
Next on my list is Trust Agents.

I am using Yet Another Related Post Plugin and Zementa. But I will look into Link Within. Are you familiar with these? How do they differ?
  • The major difference is that LinkWithin will pull and display images from your posts if they're available. It is hosted off your site, though, so for some that's a dealbreaker. Personally, it doesn't bother me.
  • Even though LinkWithin is a simply method to show related posts with images you still have to add a extra outgoing url for every post. Instead of doing this I prefer to use Wordpress own plugin with some customization.
  • You're very right there, Stefan, but what I've seen is -- I get about 3 or 4 times the amount of clicks on Related Posts with LinkWithin than I ever did with any of the other plugins I've used. So while it does have a couple cons, the pros have been worthwhile.
  • Great article Matt, keep up the good work.
  • Matt, this is a great article. I just started using the Thesis theme about a week ago and your site is full of helpful tips that I'm using for my redesign. Just ordered "Trust Agents"! Thanks for the info and keep up the good work!
  • Ansh
    Hi Matt,

I love your website. I recently purchased Thesis myself. It's amazing!

I like the small widget to the left of your page (with twit, facebook, rss) - is this available as a wordpress plugin?
  • It is not available as a Wordpress plugin, but Matt Gross wrote an awesome tutorial for how to make it. It is written for the Thesis Theme, in particular, but can be adapted for any theme or web site.
  • Ansh
    Thank you, Matt. :)
  • This post is spot on. Ya I use most of the things you have mentioned in this post - except PrettyLink and Screenr. Also the "Trust Agents" is not yet available in India :(
  • Screenr isn't even a week old as of today, so most people haven't used it yet! As for Trust Agents, I made sure I was one of the first to get it. Geeky maybe, but who cares! Once you're able to get a copy, I highly encourage you to cease the opportunity.
  • I think one important thing that I would like to add is - Windows Live Writer. An awesome desktop blog editor for all bloggersand I could not find a similar quality software anywhere. MS rocks here! To be frank, I use my Windows Vista mostly for just Windows Live Writer!!
  • I've heard people refer to LiveWriter before, but I can't personally vouch for it -- I've been a faithful and diehard Mac user for years now. It does seem to have a strong following and user base though, and in today's blogging world, that says A LOT.
  • neerajlall
I am using the LinkWithin widget on my tech blog but it doesn't shows images from my posts when i choose to show less than 5 related posts. Can you help me?
  • From what I can tell about LithWithin, it will NOT display thumbnails if more than two of the related posts do not have images from which to pull (either no image or too small). I suggest emailing their support team if you need more info! They responded to me within 24 hours.
  • lara515
Hi Matt - Great post. Do you use Pretty Link Pro? It looks interesting, but do you think it's really worth $150 since most free plug-ins + the Thesis title options can do the same things? I'm launching my site next month and am not sure if it's worth buying this before 9/1 to get the discount.
  • Lara, I don't use PrettyLinkPro on MattFlies.com, but I have on a couple of client's sites that have a bigger need for it than I do. For them, it's been a lifesaver for it's ease of use and multiple features. 1 plugin beats 10 plugins, right?
  • Great tips, I'm going to pass this article along to my network. Thanks!
  • So is this just a post about Chris Brogan, Darren Rowse, Brian Clark and Chris Pearson? With affiliate links thrown in for good measure?

How about comparisons between platforms to see which is better? Or why SEO is so important? Or design tools? (Which you'll need if you want Thesis to sing, unless you're a coder with a lot of patience). Or social bookmarking's importance? Or Google Reader and Technorati? How about subscription options - benefits of different services like Feedburner, Feedblitz, Feedly, etc?

This is more like a sales pitch for 4 established bloggers than it is a How-To article.
  • John, thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

Yes, this article is loaded with things about Brogan, Rowse, Clark, and Pearson... But when you're talking about blogging resources, they should rule the conversation in every way. And if my linking to a product, of course I'm going to use an affiliate link! That's just good sense! I will say, though, that I purchased every one of those products from someone else's affiliate link. I've benefitted from the products and thus I decided to endorse them.

As for your suggested topics, I write more articles on designing for Thesis than pretty much anyone except a handful of the best - most of which even link back to me (including the official Thesis blog). Also, this article was simply an opinion piece on what I think are a few things to help my fellow bloggers out. That's the beauty of blogging!

Once again, John, thanks for swinging by -- Hope to see you often.

Great post - but I would have your links open up into a new window. You don't want people leaving your blog.
  • Thanks for the post, but I like to give users the option on whether or not to open most things in a new window. For some more in-depth reading on this, check out this article on Smashing Magazine.
  • First time on your site. I love it. I guess what I'm trying to do is very similar to what you're already doing; and doing very well, if I may say so.

I'm starting to think I need to give Wordpress a try and ditch Blogger (which seems now to be for beginners). Slightly different from your approach, I'm doing daily themes at ahmadism.com I was already thinking of changing the name to make it more spell-friendly; but many have said to keep it as is. I would love your take (and that of your readers) on whehter I should keep the name or change it.

I'm open to all suggestions and comments.

  • I would definitely consider a move to Wordpress if I were you. It's flexibility, seo optimization, and powerful backend make it a serious blogger's must have.

As for your domain name, switching can be a hassle, especially concerning SEO and incoming links. If you would like something more memorable, I'd suggest buying another domain name and simply pointing it to your current site (301 redirect, perhaps). That way your current incoming links will still function and other users have the option of using the simpler domain name. There are, however, negatives with this route as well. I'll see if I can get some more people to chime in on this one...
  • Can't believe I've never heard of screenr before. Not sure what I'll use it for, but I'm sure I will. Love the price too, of course.
  • Screenr is pretty cool! It's only been out a few days, so it isn't mainstream quite yet!
  • Hey, Matt.

Thank you for useful post. Btw, how do you have the widget (on your LHS of page) for twitter, facebook, friendfeed, rss, mail etc.
  • Glad you like! The widget on the left can be created by following this tutorial by Matt Gross - http://thesistutor.com/how-to-add-killer-social...
  • nuwomb
I picked up trust agents the other day, I was at the book store as soon as they FINALLY got copies and it was actually still wrapped up in a box on the skid. I had to go back the next day to grab it.

I am looking to really ramp up my blogging and change my life in the next few months.

I am going to test out the linkedin within for related posts. It seems more interactive with the thumbnails.
  • Once again...great suggestions. Just added Linkwithin to my blog, as I was trying to figure out how you did it on here! LOL. It meshes perfectly with my blog and definitely encourages clicking around. Since I have alot of video, it thumbnails them nicely and makes ME want to watch more! LOL

    thanks again!
  • Nothing wrong with increasing your own attention to your blog!
  • What a great blog! I just purchased the Thesis theme, and I must say this is by far the most powerful theme on earth! Simple & amazing! Thanks for all the tips and tricks of using Thesis theme effectively. I am definitely bookmarking your blog :)
  • Thanks, Kiran! Thesis is definitely amazing.
  • minhmeo

    + install twetmeme
    + install Linkwithin

    i got:
    Thesis theme: Simple n Powerfull!!!
    Tweetmeme: increase RT

    Thanks for nice post :)
  • itjobs1
Great post - but I would have your links open up into a new window.
    www.staffinpowe.com
  • Thanks for the suggestion! However, most users prefer to have links open in a new tab/window only under their conditions. (For instance, when they right click and do it manually.)
  • Cool list. I'm not using Thesis, though I'm familiar with it. May take a look at it in the future. Going to go download LinkWithin now!
