The Rest of the Story

The Plane that Tried to Kill Me!As many of you already know, I’ve moved back to Lafayette due to a harrowing experience. (I’m very happy that I was able to use the word harrowing!) My flight instructor, in a moment of sheer stupidity, lost control of our airplane and we spiraled/dove about 2,000 feet before leveling off. And before hitting the ground. I was very happy about that last part.

My instructor (the only one for my program) was suspended pending investigation, meaning I was instructor-less. The company offered to move me to Trenton, New Jersey or Long Beach, California to continue flight training, but I declined mainly because I didn’t want to move that far away. But also because I’m suddenly terrified of heights. Which isn’t really an ideal fear for someone as tall as me!

Hudson Plane

To add to the story, my horrible experience happened on the same day as this event in College Station, TX (not far from where I was). Also in the same week: The amazing Hudson Bay water landing. This crazy happening was within the past few weeks as well. Not a good few weeks for the flying industry. Superman, Birds, and Bugs are all at risk!

I’ve always taken great pride in having the opportunities to experience things that most people aren’t able to do, but a near disaster is not what I had in mind! Despite everything, I’m completely healthy and I still possess my trusty sarcastic personality (a.k.a. defense mechanism).

I still plan to keep this blog as active as I possibly can, so keep it on your favorites (or add it to your favs). Oh, and leave me a comment below!

  • Kimberly, Good to hear from you! And one day, you will fly! ONE DAY!
  • Terri, the plan is now is to make a plan. That's all I've got so far.
  • Kimberly
Well as you know I dont do flights...this is just another reason why I don't fly!!!! Glad you are ok!!!
  • unbelievable...glad the experience was harrowing..and not tragic!! so what's the plan now..
  • Alisha, Good point... but I was thinking more like hospital bed tester as a potential job! That way I can sleep (my favorite thing) but still be close to the emergency room!

Krista. I've been shocked by the amount of people who care about me too! Or at least pretend to care about me...

April, Yes, it was all part of my genius plan! Just wait till you see what I've got planned next!
  • Krista
You really go all out to get people to let you know that they read this blog, that they love you, and that you would, in fact, be missed if you were not breathing the same air on this planet. Seriously, you don't have to almost die just so people will break down the wall of cynicism and let you know that you are special.

That being said, please refrain from future near brushes with death. It's really not nice for those who care about you... which is an impressively high number considering your extreme sarcastic nature...

    (I'm glad you're alive.)
  • Alisha
haha ya...but at least a papercut can be fixed with a bandaid...whereas, a crash might take a few thousand bandaids! ;)
  • Alisha, good to hear from you! I'm thinking I want to be as far away from pilots as possible! And papercuts hurt worse than anything else!
  • Alisha
Well....I'm glad you are alive my dear! The world wouldn't be the same without you!! You should move to Pcola...we have a naval base here and the best pilots in the world (The Blue Angels).....but maybe you should pick a less hazardous career like an accountant..I mean the papercuts and headaches would stink, but it's better than crashing!
  • Jeremy, I haven't decided yet, but probably! I'll keep this one as well though...

Tj, thanks for the truly inspirational and heartfelt comment! And I have found my new dream: Megan Fox!
  • April, It's all about getting closer to you! See, there's that trusty sarcasm again!

Ryan Austin Dean, we had been doing stalls the day before, but this was a whole different ballgame. I would never dive with sharks, but I am considering flaming axe juggling.
  • april
heck yes, i knew it lol u probably made the whole plan of diving 2000 feet to get the scare of your life just to be able to have an excuse to move back home so you could be CLOSER TO APRIL!!! lol
  • Tj
I am going to miss being able to hang out with you in Houston every now and then. Hope you find a dream soon to fill the void this has left in you (not sure where that came from but there it is). I will let you know if I hear about anything in the job market.
  • so does this mean you're changing your domain name?
  • Also...Cessna.
  • Wow...

First of all, we're really glad you're okay, man. I've stalled in a one-prop Cesna before, but the pilot was totally in control. That alone was enough to make me scream like a little girl and grab my friend by the arm. I can't imagine going down fast, actually fearing that those moments could be the last few seconds of my life.

There's no shame in giving flying up. Just don't take up diving with sharks to replace it or anything.
  • april
wow thats crazy matt! im really glad ur okay, like seriously but def glad that "trusty sarcastic" personality made it thru it all as well. ;-) .... but yea seriously glad ur okay...that's definitely craziness! And yes!!! im the 1st to comment!!! whew hew! =) Now you're back to 3 hrs away from me!! one less hr ....lol
